  • The Lost: A New Reality: Part 5

    The flashback:

Throughout this week I had nothing but long days of work. I barely had time to do anything, but that was okay. I had my loving wife and daughter waiting at home for me. To many people, the perfect family didn’t exist. They thought it to be all an urban legend, but to me it was all quite real.

Today, I was going to surprise my wife and daughter by coming home early. Abbie had been watching the news frequently. It was reported that there were rising violent attacks happening at random all over the country, plus an unidentified virus spreading across the nation. It was rumored to be the works of terrorists. I thought this to be just a rise in the flu, and possible gang nonsense. I simply thought that the news was over glamorizing whatever was happening. Either way, this made my wife worried. So worried in fact, that she didn’t want my daughter Charlotte to go to school today. I had told her previously not to worry, that the news she was watching just liked to overdramatize things…I wish I would have listened.

When I had arrived home, the door to my house was wide open. As I approached my front door, there was blood everywhere, and evidence of a struggle. I ran inside, and saw a man that looked so sickly that his flesh was a light shade of green, almost as if it were rotting. His eyes were yellow, intensifying the look of the red veins that were covering the “whites” of his eyes. Not sure of what to do, I ran to find my wife.

There she was, laying on the floor. A big gash on her face, and another on her arm. It was as if someone had bitten chunks of flesh from her face and body. I ran to her, and shook her to try and wake her. She..was gone.

I searched frantically for my daughter, I couldn’t find her anywhere. Then I saw her through the front door that remained open. I cried out, “CHARLOTTE!! My baby, are you okay? Come here, sweetie. Everything’s going to be okay.”That’s when she slowly turned around…

She wasn’t herself. She ran towards me…with a look in her eye that I couldn’t recognize. tumblr_lrxw2rnvK91r3sgwfo1_500

I ran back inside, having to face the man that did this to my family. I wasn’t armed, so I didn’t have a clue as to what to do. As he charged at me, I pushed him out of the way. I ran back to my wife, closing the door behind me. I held her and cried, “come back to me, I can’t live without you….” As I hugged her close, I felt her hands tighten around mine. “Baby?” I said with a question in my voice. It wasn’t her, but somebody I couldn’t possibly recognize. She..tried to attack me. The darling wife that I once loved.

Everything after that was a blur.

The only thing I remembered was by some miracle, managing to get my family into the garage and locking them in there. I just couldn’t kill them…

As the daze started to fade away from my mind, I awoke in the dark…the darkness of my basement, and my mind.
